3Com 56k voice faxmodem PCI 5690
When I send an email with a file attachment of any size (.3 MB or larger) the modem will crash after a few minutes. I used to have a string in the extra settings that eliminated this problem but lost it in an upgrade. HELP ive looked all over and cant find this fix...

Try s32=98
(disables 56k)

Also: without string, I would suggest leaving modem speaker on to see if retrain occurs (M2 in extra settings)

The string that I had I believe increased or decreased the retrain time? I never disabled V90. I stayed connected at 45333. Why didn't I write it down? Woe is me....

Thank you Richard for helping me out here. This a real pain and I had it solved months ago. I have sent a request in to 3com and if they reply with the answer I will post it here. I know I'm not the only one who has experienced this stupid problem.
I did try the settings you suggested and connected at 33600. Thats unacceptable. I also turned the speaker all the way up and sent a large file 2608K when it reached 4% on the message sent and 131,431 bytes on the connection status screen it stalled. I listened for 5 minutes and heard nothing except my harddrive windup at the stall. finally i got the error message from netscape and the message dropped. At this point I'm still connected but unable to surf or send and receive files. I am connected but not. I manually disconnect and reconnect and all is fine again. The extra settings that worked as far as I remember were as simple as S32=1 and it solved the problem. Why didn't I write it down?????

Thanks again for your help.

Terry

When you connected at 33.6k, did you still have the problem? (I understand the speed isn't acceptable, but what I'm interested in is whether it affects the problem);

In HyperTerminal, you can get the complete command set / help screen for you modem by typing

ATs$
AT$
AT&$

Hi Richard

It did the exact same thing at 33600 and at about a 100k into the email. I looked at the command set/help and didn't see anything familiar there.

Hi again

I finally found a post on a forum that had it. S12=50
Which worked and I was able to send the complete file. Although it didn't seem to work as well as it used to. There were many stalls during the upload. What does this string mean and are there different values I can try to get it smooth again. NOTE: I wrote it down in my logbook this time :)

s12 sets the escape code guard time.

If the string
+++
occurs in the datastream, your modem may interpret as the command to go into command mode. The modem is supposed to only do this if the guard time set by s12 in 50th's of a second surrounds the +++.

Apparently, some modems in some situations will do this [without the guard time?]...

Another [better] way to eliminate this as problem is to redefine the escape code character - this is set with register s2 and defaults to 43 (ASCII code for +)

Setting s2 to 255 disables escape code detection.

See: www.808news.com/56k/escape.htm

Richard
