broken Tl Posts: 1 | Posted - 9/11/2000 4:59:06 PM Two weeks ago I purchaced a 3com/USR PCI Voice Faxmodem. Compared to my previous, Lucent piece of garbage, the reliablity of this modem is unsurpassed. I can stay on for hours, and get a good connection speed. But I have a problem. I connect to my ISP at a consistent 49.3, when I load pages, I usually can get a pretty high rate of transfer... 40-50 k range. But, I'm also an active mp3 downloader, and I've noticed an annoying trend. I usually get a download rate of 1.90 kb, 2.20 kb at BEST, even at night. My avg. throughput per call is usually around the 13000-15000 bps range. My friend, who lives in the same general area (same phone lines) and has a similar USR modem, can get download speeds of about 3-4 k and connect speeds at around 53.3. What am I doing wrong? Is there an init string I can use, or something else I can do to fix this, or is this as good as it gets? My ISP, btw, is compuserve, and I don't think that it's the problem, since I've tried altavista freeaccess, and AOL with similar results. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 9/13/2000 9:38:03 AM From your description, it doesn't sound as if your connection is very good (nor, your friend's - a 49.3k connect rate should produce throughput on compressed files & 'perfect' connection that exceeds 49kbps or over 5KB/sec.) Downloading web pages: compression can produce higher throughput than otherwise would be obtained. Poor throughput d/l files: can be beyond your modem: Or your modem - Until you check your modem diag screens, and try other ISPs, you will not be able to isolate problem.... Aloha, |
