We have windows 98...us Robotics 56k modem...Pentium II Processor based AGP mainboard Ep-61LXA-M. When we lof off and disconnect from the telephone line,we are unable to reconnect unless we either re start or shut down the computer. It only happens when we log off. We can hang up and reconnect...no problem. It's so wierd, and driving us nuts! Can you help?

Did you see my suggestions in Other to "Need cold boot to connect second time?"

Try enabling your Modem log and seeing if there are any clues in there.

Also can you at least connect to Hyperterminal after you disconnect? If you get a symptom like "port already in use" it means that your disconnection isn't complete.

If you are relying on Internet Explorer's AutoDisconnect/ ExitDisconnect feature that could be your problem. It is not reliable. You should try manually disconnecting before closing IE using your modem icon (e.g. right click Hangup or double click Hangup). Another alternative that sometimes works is to start Outlook Express and use File Work Offine (Alt-F,W). OE seems to be able to keep better track of the state of the DUN connection and will offer to hangup for you if it thinks you are still connected.
