I am a novice at modem issues, but I HAD a perfectly operational modem until saturday. When I invoke dialup networking, the operation completes until my password is authenticated, and then the modem drops the connection. I have swapped modems with an older 28.8, and still have the same problem. I switched phone lines to my house line as a test, no difference. I ran system file checker, and uninstalled and reinstalled tcp/ip and dial up networking, no change. I think there is something fundamental that I am missing. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
steve

Perhaps you no longer have an [active] account at the ISP you are calling..... or you have inadvertently changed your user name or password.

Do you get a DUNs error message?

To get a better idea where the problem is, try connecting using a Post Dial Terminal (pdt).

To do this:
- go into Dial Up networking,
Right-Click:
- the ISP Conenctoid
Left-Click:
- Properties
- Configure
- Options
- Bring up terminal window after dialling
- OK
- OK

try to connect again, and when the modem has completed the handshake, a black terminal window will pop up.

If the terminal window is full of garbage (lines and lines of unreadable text), then either your ISP doesn't support a terminal connection, or your modem isn't compatiable with the ISP's. Hopefully you'll be prompted to enter your username. Do this, then press enter. Then you'll be prompted for a pw. Do this then press enter. you should now be given an IP address. CLick on Continue F7.

If you are now disconencted, then you should re-install Communications from the add/remove programs applet in your control panels.
