Hi all,

When I'm disconnected by my ISP, and when I disconnect voluntarily, my telephone rings. When I pick it up, I hear modem line noise, as though my modem hasn't dropped the connection. I immediately hang up, and all is well. But if I don't pick up the receiver and put it back down, it'll ring several times, sometimes indefinitely.

It's been going on for months, and it doesn't happen on my other box (the dinosaur), so I know (well, I think)it's not my lines or my ISP.

The machine is a Dell PIII 450, with 256mb RAM, running Win98SE, and an internal USR 56k Winmodem (v.90).

I don't think it's a driver issue either, as I cannot find any more recent software than what I have (and as an aside, I really hate winmodems anyway, but that's neither here nor there). IIRC, the software I have is dated 9-26-98--the most recent available from Dell or USR.

ideas?

And I should add it's not a call waiting issue, either--I don't have call waiting.

Weird. I had this problem while multi-linking. 2nd modem would disconnect, then that respective line would start ringing. I figured it was the ISP warning me - seeing how I wasn't signed up for such service.

I've seen this occur when using phone. You make a call, no one answers, or ans. machine picks up, or call time & temp. for example. You hit flashhook and make another call. Upon hanging up, phone rings and you hear original call again (time & temp, ans machine). Drove us crazy until we figured it was the 3-way calling feature. Needed a longer interval after hanging up, before dialing again.

Any chance you have modem set to redial several times until desired connect speed is reached? Just a hunch.

Does sound like a telco custom calling feature trying to kick in - probably caused by the telco seeing multiple flash when your modem hangs up.
I'd disconnect everything else from the line, and see if it still happens... if it does, I'd suspect bad modem. Some of the new USR modems use a solid-state device instead of the traditional and more expensive mechanical relay to go on/off hook.

Aloha,
Richard
