I am using a USR 56k voice modem to try to provide system status to a user calling into the system remotely. The PC is running our VTS software which does the modem control and voice simulation. When I call into the system I can play the system status information over the system speakers through the sound card. The final step is to plug the output of the sound card into the mic input of the modem to play the system status information to the remote caller at the other end of the phone. When I make this final connection the voice output is lost. The voice output is not getting relayed from the mic input to the phone via the modem. I have experimented with the #cls=8, fclass=8, #vtx, #vrx and #vtr voice commands (as well as a few others) with no success. Anyone have any ideas? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Frank.

The output of sound card (speaker output? line output?) is not compatible with a microphone input - the levels and impedances do not match.

You need to either get the audio to the modem via the system bus (PCI/ISA); or if the modem will accept a real microphone's input under the conditions you are using (ie, plug a microphone into the mic input and talk into it at appropriate time), then you need a matching transformer/pad to get the appropriate signal level to the modem.

What you say sounds logical, however, in my experience it does not hold true. We already have a dial-out system that uses a cable between the speaker output of the sound card and the mic input of the modem to play speech to a user on the other end of the phone. It has worked well for several months now. The problem is that I cannot get our dial-in system to perform the same function using the same (or different) init string. The idea is that a person dials in to the modem and, after connecting, the sound card plays system status to the user at the other end of the phone. This part I cannot get to work although the speech over the phone portion has already been verified to work with the dial-out system.

Frank.
