I recently upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. My modem is a USR ISA winfax, and the driver with Win2K loaded fine and seems to be working fine. I have not been able to find a newer driver from 3com/USR for this particular modem.

The problem: under Win98, I routinely got connection speeds of 49,333 with an occasional 50,666 or 52,000. Since the upgrade to Win2000, the maximum speed I can get it to connect at is 31,200. I have verified all port settings, etc.

Any suggestions as to how to get my old performance back? (aside from going back to Win98)

Thanks

Check to see if you have the port speed for the Modem / Com Port set to at least 57,600 (115,200 preferred).

Do you hear the boings in the handshake?

If you do not, V.90 connection is not being attempted which would be caused either by incorrect port speed (applies to modem w/ real COM port only) or bad init string.

My port speed is set to 115,200 (that was the first thing I checked). I'm not getting the boings in the handshake, so no 56k connect is even being tried. Since the only driver I can get for the modem is the one included in Win2000, I suspect a bad or incomplete INIT string. Any ideas on how to change it?

Thanks

You can put
&F1
in extra settings that resets the modem to factory default for high speed connections (this &F1 valid only with USR modems);
This will over-ride DUNS commands to modems;
You could then look at modemlog to see what command is causing 56k to be disabled;
