I have a USR Internal Fax modem(Model 5687) on an Abit VH6 board with Win2K Pro. This morning, it suddenly started to act up! I could not establish a connection! The error message says that the modem is either not connected or the IRQ is not set right! So I shut down the machine, reseated the modem, but still no go! Win 2K, by the way, has always shown the entry for the modem in its device manager. I then tried to change the IRQ--currently, it uses IRQ 2, auto assigned by Win 2K. But when I tried to change the IRQ to 3, which is used by Com 2, the machine took so long to respond that I couldn't wait! I reset the machine after I waited for about 3 to 4 minutes!
Nothing like this happened before! I did nothing this morning, excpet opened the case and realigned my Plextor CD RW with the CD ROM drive, so that it looks nicer from the outside!
While I am at this, I should note that I am using the native driver for this modem provided by Win 2K. And, for whatever reason, Win2K *always* assigns COM 3 for the modem rather than COM 2, which I am told is what USR modems like to have! (Why this is the case, I don't know!) The worst problem before today is that *often* the modem would drop to the 28.8K connection rather than the 56K connection. So when I do not hear the bonging, I immediately hit the "Cancel" button and redial again so as to have a 56K connection. Sorry for the rambling. Any help out of this situation is appreciated!

Coincidence? Or something zapped or jarred when you went into the system?

I wouldn't worry about the COM port assignment - if your modem is PCI it needs an enumerator to translate the PCI device to a 'standard' COM port device;

At this point, you might try removing the modem both in Win2K SYSTEM Devices and physically; reboot; make sure Devices show no conflicts/errors; shut down; re-install modem....

Thanks for the reply. I have since taken out the USR modem from my primary machine and put it in the backup one. When I took the modem out, I found, to my dismay, that I actually did *not* set out the Com port and IRQ right! However, after I had set the jumpers to Com 2, IRQ3, Win2K *refuses* to recognize it--either in my primary machine or in my backup one! Frustrated, I took the USR modem to my backup machine, and the LT Winmodem to my primary one! My LT winmodem always beats the USR modem either in terms of the initial connect speed or the throughout! And this is also true with the Conextant HSF mini PCI modem in my Compaq laptop!
BTW, the USR modem often has a tendency to fail to connect at the V 90 speed. So, when I don't the hear the bonging sound, I immediately hit the Cancel button and start the connection all over again! I don't know if this is caused by the modem not being set at Com2 and IRQ3!? And I hope through a reinstall of Win2K, Win2K can recognize the USR modem at Com2, IRQ3!
