Im looking to increase my modem performance....only because I can't get dsl or cable for another 6 months or so. I play Sierras' CounterStrike online...in which having no lag and a moderately high ping is important. So with that said....do I need to have IPX Header Compression on?? Do I need to have Error Control enabled?? Do I need to have IP Header Compression on?? Do I need to enable Software Compression?? How about Port Settings?? I could go on all day....but I think you get what Im looking for. My computer is a 1gig Thunderbird with 256megs, and a USR 5686 External. I just want to know what to enable and what NOT to enable. Please help....thank you.........john

I would also suggest trying Visual Route, and several different ISPs

Error control should be on.
Compression (everywhere) should be on.

You can experiment with different settings, but remember that factors beyond the modem themselves can cause constantly changing latency to your game server or test point. The best way to test modem settings / changes is to trace to the closest (first) router at your ISP.
