I recently switched my ISP and am having trouble. I still have both ISP's as I haven't cancelled the old one yet. I have 2 computers, a P300 Desktop and a P166 Laptop. The laptop has an ActionTec PCMCIA modem and will connect to either ISP everytime. The desktop is a different story. It has a USR X2 modem updated to V.90. I will connect to the old ISP everytime. It will connect to the new ISP only about 1 of 20 times. Their tech support says it has to be the modem. So I bought a new modem, a Motorola SM56. No difference, connects to the old ISP everytime but not to the new one, what could it possibily be looking for it can't find? This is all plugged into the same phone jack with both computers.

I should add that I have tried various init strings with both the Motorola and the USR and can get connections if I disable the v.90 and X2 or Flex. But then the speeds are down to 14.4 or 19.8. My main concern is the laptop will connect with no init springs shouldn't the desktop also?

I'd bet the new ISP has very old modem firmware at their end.

As for trying a Motorola SM56 instead of the USR---- are you really serious?

The Motorola is about as bad as you can get.
[In my opinion.]
