I can't even get Win 95 to recognize my modem.. I followed the directions to the "T".. Is it possible that the cable that connects the modem to the computer is bad?

Could be cable; could be modem; could be COM port;
Try connecting to modem via Hyperterminal. External modem (as long as it's not USB) doesn't need to be installed in Windows to be used with Hyperterminal.
