Mary Tl Posts: 6 USA | Posted - 5/11/2000 6:26:22 PM Hi, I have the modem in my subject, but am having problems with it. My phone lines are good and I've done all the tests I've run accross in different forums. I have a program called modem check and when I check my connections after I have been online, the modulation says V.34 Shouldn't this say V.90? I don't know much about this stuff and really need some help. Are there some special settings I should have to make my connection better? Right now I'm lucky to connect at 28800 and that's after connecting and disconnecting a few times. Edited by - Mary on 5/11/00 6:49:41 PM |
shano64 Tl Posts: 16 | Posted - 5/11/2000 9:41:28 PM I have the same problem as Mary. I used to get hook up at 33000, but ever since I switched IPS's it has been at 21000 ALL the time. I also got modemckech yesterday and here are some results I copied hoping that somebody can see what the problem here. Daveman_750 Tl Posts: 86 USA | Posted - 5/12/2000 1:26:22 PM If your SNR is 15, something is NOT right. If it REGULARLY reports an SNR around 15, call your telco and don't even MENTION modem speed and say your line is noisier than you feel it should be. For a V.34 connect it should be around 30 on a decent line. Cant be higher than about 36 dB on a V.34 connect because of quantization noise. NOTE: IT CAN BE HIGHER ON A PCM CONNECT BECAUSE HERE THERE IS NO QUANTIZATION NOISE. |
Daveman_750 Tl Posts: 86 USA | Posted - 5/12/2000 1:29:02 PM BTW if you are getting V.34 connects mostly below 28800 and voice calls sound OK you PROBABLY have more than 1 a/d conversion. |

shano64 Tl Posts: 16 | Posted - 5/12/2000 11:20:54 PM I had a line test about 6 months ago after we had a storm and our phone lines went down. Since then I personally have not noticed any line noise. I have a line that goes straight from the jack on the PC to a hole in my floor and wired to the posts in the basement. I also always make sure that I have no other type of wiring around the line, and my PC is on a ciruit breaker of it's own ( I had a air cleaner once on the same eletrical circuit that made noise on the line). I also just got address.com free ISP and went from 21000 up to 26400. My goal is to get back that 33000 lightning speed (LOL) I had before. And another thing, cable is not in my area yet.

Daveman_750 Tl Posts: 86 USA | Posted - 5/13/2000 6:43:25 PM GET YOUR LINE CHECKED. .1 SNR IS NOT GOOD!!! It probably isn't REALLY .1 but its probably pretty bad. See if it shows up on voice calls and if so call your telco repair dept. They'll have to fix it if it noticeably affects voice calls because they provide VOICE GRADE LINES. |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 5/14/2000 12:27:28 PM Shano - Your y11 would indicate your line is not 56k-compatible (3750=52); probably best to use init string to disable 56k (s32=98); Ask your telco if they can give you a better line (integrated SLC instead of non?) MARY - Line s/b OK for 56k, but you didn't get 56k, and there TWENTYFIVE retrains Granted!!! Probably at the ISP or route to the ISP you are calling. Try other #s. Link Aloha, |
shano64 Tl Posts: 16 | Posted - 5/15/2000 9:30:02 PM That will be the first thing I do tomorrow. My telco hates me as it is...heehee. I tried the S32=98 string and went up to 28800 now. Very much appreciate all your help! |
Mary Tl Posts: 6 USA | Posted - 5/16/2000 4:03:20 AM Thanks Richard, I've looked at the links page and there are no numbers I can use, I did look at modem check again and the retraints were 0 this time, this stuff has me all confused, but I'll keep working on it, thanks again for your help, Mary thanks for any help |
shano64 Tl Posts: 16 | Posted - 5/16/2000 7:30:55 AM When I try the init string S32=98 to disable 56k, it works when I use it for address.com ISP, but it will not work for my primary ISP (ameritech.net) I have been using. It will dial-up, but "hangs" at handshaking. |
Daveman_750 Tl Posts: 86 USA | Posted - 5/16/2000 7:44:40 AM For Shan064, your line is probably no good. At a symbol rate (bandwidth) of 2400 the frequency response on your line sucks. But the good news is that your telco is required to provide 2700 Hz of bandwidth, from 300 to 3000 Hz. Complain to them that they are not providing the amount of bandwidth they legally have to. Mary, with the highest V.34 symbol rate (bandwidth) possible, 3429, your line must be terribly noisy. Complain about noise on voice calls if you can notice any. USE THE SAME JACK THAT YOUR MODEM IS PLUGGED INTO TO TEST YOUR LINE OUT FOR VOICE CALLS. |
shano64 Tl Posts: 16 | Posted - 5/16/2000 10:15:02 AM I'm going to be calling my Telco here in a few, but for the heck of it, here is another "modemcheck" readout from today. Modulation V.34 Edited by - shano64 on 5/16/00 10:20:21 AM |
Daveman_750 Tl Posts: 86 USA | Posted - 5/16/2000 11:08:31 AM If you get a symbol rate of 3200 the majority of the time calling your telco isn't going to work because then they are providing the bandwidth they are required to provide plus 500 Hz. |
Daveman_750 Tl Posts: 86 USA | Posted - 5/16/2000 11:09:58 AM Sorry, I didn't notice the SNR of 11. If thats the case you can probably complain about ordinary line noise on voice calls. |
shano64 Tl Posts: 16 | Posted - 5/16/2000 2:42:14 PM I really, really do appreciate all of your help Daveman, but if you can explain to me what SNR is and what is a good number. I know what db is, so 11 db would mean? I'm picking up 11 decibals of crap? And that a lower number is better? The telco did a test on the phone and said it was good, but I told them that we had a storm a week ago (and we did) and since then, my modem and fax has not been the same, and that I run my business at home (Muhahaha). So I have a 3:00 appointment with them here Thursday. Also, do you have a website that explains more? |
