I have a us robotics 56k external modem and it connects fine. The problem is that after it connect it just flat lines. Nothing happens but it is still connected through the phone. It started doing this after I had to wipe and reformat my pc. I didn't change anything on my pc though. Everything is set up exactly the same and my modem worked fine before. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you very much.

Check a couple of things. Windows likes to set up the external USR modems as standard modems. Also, check your irq settings and see if there are multiple modems set up. If there are this may be the problem, delete your com ports and modem from device manager and under control panel, modem. This should remove your modem from the system. Restart into safe mode and check to see if there are multiple drivers installed on your system. (For some reason Windows '98 loves to install multiple drivers that are found only in safe mode.) Delete those if they are there. Maybe that is your problem. If not, try and get the model number for your USR modem and I'll see what I can find out.

Disconnect the phone plug from the modem when this happens; then plug it back in; if the line is still held open by the modem, the modem is defective and needs repair.
