I recently upgraded to an USR external while the OEM PCI LT Winmodem is still inside the box. I disabled the LT on the device manager but still Win 98 and the 3Com software can't detect the new modem. Do I need to physically remove the LT for Win to detect the USR?

I would remove the old modem first just to remove a possible cause of problems. I would check your bios to make sure your serial ports are enabled if they are not then it will not detect.

I agree. Take the modem out. Sometimes there are conflicts if you have more than one modem in your system the OS can become confused. You can also try to "force" the OS to read your modem. Go into control panel and double click on the modem icon and if you have no modem installed it will give you the option to detect the modem. Tell it not to detect the modem and you should click on have disk, set it to the cd. Go through all of that. Pick the com port and Windows should install it. That might just work for you. Test it in hyperterminal if you wish.

The LT should have nothing to do or interfere with a standard external USR modem (*assuming it is not a USB modem); the USR modem needs to connect to a standard COM port; the COM port - if builtin to motherboard - needs to be enabled in the system BIOS;

If the modem is connected properly to standard COM port, you should be able to use the modem without it being installed by Windows with Hyperterminal connected directly to COM port

The original poster here...

My external USR is working fine but the OS just won't recognize it. So does the 3Com software.
