nielsph Tl Posts: 7	Posted - 1/17/2001 1:24:49 PM Here is a challenging problem for all you 56k gurus: Im using a 3com / u.s. robotics internal winmodem (product ID 83297800) When browsing or downloading large files, data transfer sometimes just suddenly stops (actually quite often). If im just browsing, hitting the stop button and then the refresh button, will restart the data transfer. When downloading large files I have to cancel the download and try again. Downloading files larger than 2 Mb is almost impossible. This happens no matter what speed I connect at. Even also if I degrade the modem to the old fashioned 33.6 using init string s32=66(I guess its called V34). I usually have the s32=66 string enabled, since my phone line quality is not good enough to run 56k. But im sure its good enough for 33.6, since my old modem never had any problems at 33.6. Im using Win98SE and Internet explorer 5.0. I have download the latest drivers and firmware for modem, but that did not help. I appreciate any help you can give.

nielsph Tl Posts: 7	Posted - 1/22/2001 1:27:37 PM No I have not, but I assume that my ISP is ok since I did not have any problems before I got my 56K modem. (My previous modem was a 33.6, which I unfortunately can not install om my new computer since it has no ISA slots). However, since I posted my problem, I have tried a couple of things: First of all, my old computer with the old modem has no problems. (I can not install the new modem in the old computer, since it has no PCI slots) Second,leaving the speaker on all the time with 'atm2' did not reveal any problem. The sound in the speaker is a completely even noise. Even at, and boyond the point where the transmission suddenly stops. There is no sign of speed re-negotiation, eventhough I sometimes connect at a low speed. While the download transmission is stopped I can open another browser window and continue browsing or start a new download, so there is still connection to the ISP. The download simply stopped. I can even enter a new http in the existing browser windows. It is still 'alive'. I have tried re-installing Explorer, downloaded all the upgrades but without luck.
Dorian Tl Posts: 7 Romania	Posted - 1/23/2001 4:41:56 AM Yes, nielsph, I know the feeling, it is indeed VERY frustrating. I have a USR/Com3 winmodem as well. It's a 56k Voice Internal PCI, model xx2884 Europe retail (headsets, microphone and stuff), made in Ireland, by the way. I guess it's supposed to be "international", not only USA/Canada, as it can be set to work on "CCITT" using the "switch country" option (not documented on the adjoined literature, but that's typical). But IT IS NOT! I think this world should eventually be told USR/3Com winmodems won't work outside USA/Canada! I have accounts with 3 ISPs and the maximum I could achieve is 42666 with one and 44000 with the other two. But that's just the connectivity side of the story. When it comes to actual transfer rates, it's somewhere between 2-3 Kb/s. That is outrageous for an US brand name product costing THREE TIMES more than similar 56k modems made elsewhere in the world! Worse than my good old 33.6 Zoltrix FM336 (Rockwell chip), that I've kept operational inside my machine since it's ISA. Last night I downloaded this 2Mb file from ftp://ftp.diamondmm.com/pub/s3/desktop/395/395_win9x_me_82033.exe Guess what? USR Robotics 56k connected at 44000 started download at 21 Kb/s and in less than 1 minute dropped to 2.1 Kb, constant for the next 30 or so minutes needed to finish the job! I was furious, so I've immediately repeated same job, same ISP, using my ISA 33.6 modem connected at 33600 and achieving 3.7 Kb/s actual transfer rate, flat for the next 15 minutes to get the job done. How about that? Today I've put an ad in the classifieds to sell out my brand new US Robotics/3Com 56k Voice Internal PCI "modem" (is it really worth this name?) for a fraction of the $100 I've paid for it only last week... Huh!

Now you've mentioned it, i have made some small calculations, and it actually seems that my transfer rate is much lower than what should be expected from the connect speed. Considering the extra phonebills I've had to pay in order to re-attempt download of large files, I might be better off throwing away the damn 'modem' and buy a new one . Anyway, thanks for the comments. If anyone else out there has additional comments, feel free to write. But I think Im going to look for a new modem. Have you any recommendations ?
