Hi all, I'm having a real nightmare trying to configure my "super high tech" USR modem. I'll leave the colorfull language at the door here, but if anyone has any suggs, or init strings that work for them, that would be great. Specific things I'm looking for are, turning of MNP2-4 and MNP5. I also want to fix the hanging of connection that I get when the modem renegotiates or something like this. TIA

In my web quest for the magic answer to "Why on earth the download speed on my 3Com/USRobotics 56k PCI internal modem isn't even close to 56K?" I found this site www.optimizing.net of a very high tech guy who seems truly fond of his USRobotics Courier v.Everything. His expert init string (©) is &F1&A3&K3S15=2S11=38S27=16S69=12 and of course it didn't work on my thing (which is NOT a Courier, but a USRobotics modem nonetheless). Maybe it'll work on yours. Anyway, his site is worth checking out.

Yep, I checked out optimizing.net, and found the data there to be very good. Of course the init string didn't work on my modem, it actually made me connect at 4800. =) Of course, no ISP I have found is telling me there MTU, and USR is closed on the weekends and offers no tech support, unless you pay big time for it. What USR do you have, and did you ever find success?

It's a "Europe retail" model (I live in Romania, by the way) that I bought recently in a spiffy box with headsets and mic. But I'm more and more inclined to believe that 3Com/USR (win)modems won't work properly outside USA/Canada. Yet they sell them all over the world. I have accounts with 3 ISPs and the maximum I could achieve is 42666bps with one and 44000bps with the other two. But that's just the connectivity side of the story. When it comes to actual transfer rates, it's in the region of 3 Kbs. That is a shame I think for a famous brand name product costing 2-3 TIMES more than similar 56k modems made in Taiwan for instance. Worse than my good old 33.6K Zoltrix (Rockwell chip), that I've kept functional inside my machine since it's ISA. When I ftp-downloaded a driver update of 2 megs for my video card the other day it took me a good half an hour (!) with the USR 56K modem. Same job with my 33.6K ISA modem, same ISP, completed in less than 20 minutes. How about that?

If you speed limit your modem to a lower rate at initial connect, you may avoid retrains.
www.808news.com/56k/x2-linklimit.htm

All USR modems include the ? command to get a help screen of supported commands; MNP enable/disable is in s-registers, so if you use Hyperterminal and give modem the command
ATS$
you will get a list of all s-register commands/values.

But, note that <MNP2-5 will not be used unless you disable V.42, or if for some reason V.42 is disabled at your ISP (ie, disabling MNP will normally have no effect on your connection); If V.42 is disabled and you also disable MNP, you will not get error correction - which most likely will result in an even poorer connection.

Aloha,
Richard
