My modem worked fine for about 4 months. Then when I tried to connect, the dial tone sounded very noisey. When using the phone (through the modem), the noise is not present on the line. I bought a new modem (3com) and installed it. It worked fine for about a day. Sometimes deleting the modem and the PCI from my system settings, I can get it to work for a while. Eventually it will not even work after that. I recently formated my hard drive and re-installed Win98. My modem then worked fine for about 4 days. Now I have the noise back on the dial tone. Removing the components from the system and re-installing does not seem to help. Any ideas?

Testing the line noise using a phone thru the modem jacks proves only that THAT portion of the modem is ok. That has little to do with the overall performance of the modem. Try another pci slot, after deleting modem thru device manager.

I have tried every PCI slot available and I still can't get it to work. I did finally get it to after installing the driver several times, but when I went home for lunch today, it is not working again. I am sure that the modem is OK since I have two and both are basically new. If the modem itself were bad, I would think that it would not start working again.

It could be the line cord, jack, or other devices plugged into the phone line on other outlets.

I seem to have fixed it. I installed the new VIA drivers and knock on wood, I have not experienced the problem since.

Thanks,
Kevin
