Hi-

Yep, I am one of many having modem connection speed problems..It's enough to drive a sane person bonkers!
I have done some research etc and just don't know if I am SOL or if there are things I can do..Hope you can help!

I have a USR 56k External Modem(5686-03). I am hooked up to an ISP which is v.90 capable(which I have)and I have been stuck at 21,600 BPS since day one. When I lived somewhere else in my state I was getting 48k no problem and it was in a very remote area as well.

Here are my problems(modem AT info follows)

1. Stuck at 21,600 BPS
2. When dialing in to ISP, I go through 2 cycles if not more before I can connect.

I am living in a house with a family with my own seperate phone line.

Here are my modem stats according to "Modem Check":

Do you have anything else plugged into line? If not, your line is lousy, but your report doesn't indicate more than one a/d conversion. Might use Richard's site and dial other #'s with hyperterminal. http://808news.com/56k/trouble4.htm. It's renogiating the call because it can't get a 56k connect. Time to narrow it down, maybe even try it on the other line for testing.

Thanks for the reply!!

The only thing I have hooked up to the line is my telephone.

The phone I have is rather cheap ($10, I'm a student of course) and it seems to "chirp" every now and then. Not sure if it's because of the phone line or because the phone is cheap.

I will try calling the other numbers as well as I have time, should I call the phone company as well and just have them test it? The last place I lived was in a rural area and my dial in number was 90 miles away and I got 48k..I live in a city now and I get 1/2 that..wierd times indeed!

the ROUND TRIP DELAY of 22ms would tend to indicate that the # you are calling may not be so local (ISP may use CLEC or other techniques to forward call to distant location);
The RECEIVE LEVEL of -33 is WAY low. (Higher #s = lower levels). This would indicate something is seriously wrong in either the modem, your phone line/wiring, the telco's facilities serving you, or beyond.

You need to make other calls to isolate problem.

Aloha,
Richard
