Gustavo Tl Posts: 4 | Posted - 2/16/2001 3:08:02 PM I´m having a problem, and i tried many soluctions and no soluction worked, i have a 2976 usrobotics 56k voice pci and I connect at max 38.666bps, what should i do? can i connect at 45.333bps or higher? my downloads are at max 3k/s please help me is this modem winmodem? |
Volor Tl Posts: 78 USA | Posted - 2/16/2001 4:21:48 PM Yeah, the 2976 is a Winmodem. I connect at 38,666 with my Courier & Performance Pro. What really matters is what your final downstream rate is, as USRobotics Modems tend to upshift following connection. Both of my Modems upshift to 45,333bps. In Dialup Networking, right-click on your connection icon, left-click on properties. Under your Modem, click Configure, then Options. Check "Bring up Terminal Window before dialing". After a half-hour connection to your ISP, disconnect. Attempt connection again normally. You will notice that a black screen appears. Click in the window, and type: ati6 There should be a line indicating what your speed was. Keeping in mind your speed, click Cancel. Go back to Dialup Networking, and right-click on your connection. Left-click on properties, then click Configure once more. Go to Connection -> Advanced. In the box below "Extra Settings" place the string associated with your speed... If your final speed was 45,333: &U1&N29 You may also try S32=34 which disables Transmit Level Deviation. This may improve your connection rate, or may not help at all. (I apologize for excessive information in the foregoing. I just wanted to be clear.) Let me know how things turn out. P.S. The latest Firmware (Driver) for your Modem is available @ ftp://ftp.usr.com/oem/hawk/2976/2976.exe |
LizardKing Tl Posts: 14 United Kingdom | Posted - 2/16/2001 6:03:44 PM I to have a 2976 and its not a Winmodem ive had download rates of 6k with it the ping in CounterStrike tends to be around 180 although it does have a tendency to get a connection speed of 30-40k but thats only cos my junction box in my house is at the other end of the house. Ive had my comp sat next to the junction box plugged write in to it and it was getting a connection of 45 - 50k. |
Gustavo Tl Posts: 4 | Posted - 2/16/2001 6:56:30 PM I hate this modem, i thought that it was good, and the women who sold it to me said that it wasn´t winmodem, I bought a suck modem, cause I have a usrobotics 56k voice INT and my lowest connection is 53333bps, and my lower download is 5.5k/s, and my quake ping is 150, but at 2976 everything is the opposite, slow downloads, suck connections, and so, and I need some help, so my pc doesn´t have slot ISA, only 5 pci slots, it´s ASUS k7V, so I´ve to use this modem..... is there a flash upgrade? can you help me more? VOLOR? |

LizardKing Tl Posts: 14 United Kingdom | Posted - 2/16/2001 8:44:36 PM I tried S32=34 and got a 45,333bps connection. That really suprised me. I havent tried it in games, my download rate went to around 3.5k - 4k thou |
Volor Tl Posts: 78 USA | Posted - 2/17/2001 9:41:36 AM I have been in possession of a 2976, and I don't like it for several reasons: (1) It's not agressive enough. It does (not) upshift to higher speeds as often as newer US Robotics Modems (such as the 5687 or the 5610) do. It also achieves, well...pathetic connections on rural lines. On the other hand, when on a good phone line, it performs quite acceptably. (2) The Modem pings poorly to ISP Access Servers as compared to newer US Robotics Modems. (3) It's sometimes difficult to get the drivers to install properly.
If you're still getting slow connections and performance after applying this driver, I'm sorry, but the Modem just doesn't like your line/ISP's Access Server. |
Volor Tl Posts: 78 USA | Posted - 2/17/2001 9:49:49 AM In addition... Lizardking claims the Modem isn't a Winmodem. He very well may be correct. I haven't had the Modem for some time. In fact, I gave it to my mother. If it's got jumpers on it, it's a hardware Modem. Sorry for any inconvience. |
Gustavo Tl Posts: 4 | Posted - 2/17/2001 12:34:11 PM I got 42666bps today, and the modem is working better, donwnload is 4k/s and ping on quake is 150, yeah thanks, but it happened only 1 time, and then it´s working at the same speed at 38666bps, yesterday i got 40000bps, is there any possibility to stay connecting faster than 40000bps? or 42666bps? |
LizardKing Tl Posts: 14 United Kingdom | Posted - 2/20/2001 12:53:19 PM If its got jumpers on, its a hardware modem.? were did you here that one. the only modems with jumpers on these days are old ones. the reason why they have jumpers on them is because the motherboard wasnt able to automaticly assign IRQ's. The easiest way to tell if its a hardware modem is to look at how big the drivers are. If there some little ini file then its gonna be a Hardware but because the drivers of a software modem are virtual its firmware it has to be alot bigger. Also you need a specific driver for a software but with a hardware you can use virtualy any drivers |
Volor Tl Posts: 78 USA | Posted - 2/20/2001 4:10:51 PM I didn't say all hardware Modems have jumpers. I said if the Modem does have jumpers, it uses a hardware serial controller. Maybe next time I should include pictures to help clarify my statement. Perhaps some music, and a video feed of a dancing monkey, singing the details of the message to you. If you want to be such a big shot and act like you know everything, LizardKing, maybe you should solve people's problems all by yourself instead of letting "peons" like myself pave the way for you. |
LizardKing Tl Posts: 14 United Kingdom | Posted - 2/21/2001 10:16:08 AM A: I dont think im a big shot, and a now it all. B: All i did was answer his question. C: I wasnt saying you were wrong about a modem with jumpers is a hardware, infact you are right as it would be imposible to have a software modem with jumpers kinda like a serial modem. D: I agree this modem is crap and isnt worth any money, but what your forgetting is that this a OEM modem and it isnt going to be as good as a retail card. If you wanna be imature about it all then fine, but i dont wanna see this board go into a slanging match like ive seen others go that way. This is a very informative board but i was voicing my opinion, and probably could have put it in a better way, the only thing i dont like is when im being corrected when i knew i was right. |
Volor Tl Posts: 78 USA | Posted - 2/21/2001 3:20:58 PM Sorry LizardKing, you were right. http://www.shentech.com/shentech/3comusrob56k1.html |
Volor Tl Posts: 78 USA | Posted - 2/21/2001 3:23:54 PM To add to the above message, why would anyone in their right mind mind pay $62.00 for this Modem? You could get a Performance Pro for less than that at some places. |
LizardKing Tl Posts: 14 United Kingdom | Posted - 2/21/2001 4:21:47 PM Well luckly i got it free, i love it when family upgrades the cpu's. But its still a ****e card and ive seen it for cost alot more than that. Edited by - lizardking on 2/21/01 4:23:25 PM |
