Poor connection speed, very frequent disconnects (not really disconnections, the modems stay connected, but there is no data transfer....the connection just hangs....VERY FRUSTRATING).....Why is my 2976 modem installed on both COM 3 and COM 5...is this normal? how can I improve my connection speed ( it always connects at 28,800, never any faster...V34 and never V90.

When you are connected but not responding, try pinging/traceroute to your ISP's server and beyond

Also check your modem diagnostics after a call for retrains, blers, etc.

As to 56k, check the y11 results
www.808news.com/56k/x2-adconversion.htm

If you do not have a 56k-compatible line, disable 56k on the modem with
s32=98
in extra settings.

Thank you for your insite Sir v. Richard.

I did a ping and tracert the last time my modem "hung"....both returned "request timed out" on the first hop.

Can you gleen anything from these....it looks to me that although my y11 is high, it shows that there is only one analog/digital conversion. also, 12 blers seems very acceptable for an hour long session.

Hope you can see more in these numbers than I do....thank you in advance for your help.

Opps...here are the correct diagnostics....the last set are from a different number to the same ISP....it gets a LITTLE betterperformance ...less "hangs".... but no better connection

Here are the Diagnostics for my main #...BTW, when this number "hangs" I get the same ping and Tracert responds as the other #:

You will notice on your first post, disconnect reason is unable to retrain.
This would indicate a serious compatibility problem - between your modem, phone lines, and the ISP at the other end....
