I have a Dell 700mhz that came installed with a USRobotics PCI Voice/Fax Modem. I have been having these problems:
1. It takes me forever to get a V.90 connection with my ISP. This connection now is only 33,600bps.
2. After I get the connection, after being online for awhile, my web pages refuse to load and I can't even access Outlook Express to view any new e-mail.
Word on Delltalk is that the modems that come installed in their computers have these problems. I have another computer that logs on to MSN/Dellnet with no problems. My ISP says that it is my modem and of course Dell says that it is my ISP or phone line. The other computer I have handshakes and connects properly with my ISP. I recently switched ISP's because I was having similar problems on Alltel and thought it was them. Should I purchase a new modem or is there something else I can do? I am not very computer literate when it comes to modems.

Thanks,
Linda

Nice thing about having several pc's and modems is you can isolate your problem. If you're using the same phone line with the 2 pc's, and the network dial up adapter and settings under the ISP properties are exactly like the "good" modem, it's time to change modems. If you haven't had the Dell pc long, I'd holler for a new modem. You probably got the "onsite service" plan - use it. Or, if they give you static, get a Diamond Supra Express external (not the USB) for $70 and fasten the seat belt.

It's always chapped me about Gateway and Dell - they brag about the fancy-dancy doo-dads they build on their pc's, then stick a $5 modem in it.
