At least some of top-of-the-line Courier V.Everything's do not currently qualify for a free upgrade! USR says to check back "at a later time" if your model number is not listed. USR indicates that its V.92 implementation includes software to support call-waiting and modem-on-hold, and allows the user to optimize the connection for upstream, downstream or to balance the two. [It appears that until V.92 servers are available, an upgraded modem may be set to disconnect on call waiting in a manner similar to the Lucent Win Modem.] USR, which is using a new public-relations company, has not responded to my questions and requests for more information. as from
http://808hi.com/56k/v92s.htm

I'm in Australia, I cant even find a firmware for my courier anymore as the 3com page says "go to usr.com" and the usr.com says "go to a .au bbs until we update the page"

You would think a 600$ modem would be upgradable!

USR want to push customers to buy new V.92 modems instead of providing free V.92 upgrades for all models. For some - yes, not for all.

USR released new Courier modem with PN 3CP3453. You can buy this new one to get V.92 upgrade if it really required.

But believe me - V.92 is not a top event for modem technology. V.92 will not give you so much as you expected from them.

I hope USR will thing twice about it and will release V.92 upgrade for old Courier's.

Also there is trade up program will be available to exchange old Courier's to new with the cheap fee.

Can you define cheap fee?

25$ US?
50$ US?
100$ US?
(you get the idea)
anything over 30$ US is insane if you ask me - it's a 600$ .AU modem (300$ US when I got it)

How can 'pushing one to buy a V92 modem'
rather than an upgrade be profitable?

Firstly one can change brand if they
push you to buy, whereas an upgrade
must be from them.
Secondly, seems to me they can make
more profit on the upgrade, since there
is no hardware to make.

On a $100 V92 modem (about the going rate)
how much goes into the hardware? (I would guess
at least $50).

We are talking about the USR courier modem, which is completely in a league of it's own, and still to this day fetches a high price I believe.

I would guess the cost of materials to make a $100 modem would be less than $20.

Either way, I have had alot of use out of my V.everything courier - why is it, I think it's capable of v.92 without a hardware change?

There is nothing other than the USR decision not to write firmware for old Couriers that would prevent them from supporting V.92.

So is there any news yet, or should I just scrap my Australian courier?
