Problem Description:

The PC owner has the following hardware:
Toshiba notebook computer with Pentium processor
PCMCIA modem card made by 3Com/USR (Megahertz model XJ-4336)
The modem has worked properly for years under Windows 95.
She formatted the hard drive, and then installed Windows 98 and reloaded all of the old software from floppy disks.
About a month later, the PC card modem was not able to connect to the Internet using Dialup Networking.
Failed attempts to use the modem bring up "Error 630":
Error 630: The computer is not receiving a response from the modem. Check that the modem is plugged in, and if necessary, turn the modem off, and then turn it back on.

She has tried rebooting the computer, removing the card, reinstalling the drivers off the original floppy disk, and moving the card to the other PCMCIA slot. She has borrowed another modem (a 3Com/USR Sportster 14.4 modem card), and cannot get the borrowed card to work either. She has also tried yelling at the computer and shaking it violently.

I get this problem with my Compaq
What i have to do is plug my old 14k modem in first then plug my 56k modem in.
this was forcing the computer to put the 56k on a port that wasnt already open.
I dont think you can understand that, but its hard to know without the hardware infront of me to show.
But i have no idea why its stoped working (your not mine)

Check to see if the modem can be accessed via Hyperterminal - if it can, remove & re-install DUNs.

Aloha,
Richard
