I've just installed a new USR OEM 56k (2977) PCI Hardware modem in my wifes computer and the connect speeds are all over the place. My computer shares the same phone line and I use a USR OEM 56k (2976) PCI Hardware modem and never connect less than 50666 and about a third of the time at 53333. Our machines are almost identical and I thought the only difference between the two modems was Voice on the 2976. I have the latest drivers installed for the 2977 but I must be missing something. I compared ati11 settings and the two modems report exactly the same factory settings. Her old machine connected to the exact same phone line had an older USR OEM 56k ISA Hardware modem and it never connected less than 50666.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance...

USR is usually consistent on speeds, not jumping all over the place unless there's a telco problem, even a bad phone cord to jack. And there is a chance the modem is faulty. Since I use so many modems on 3 pc's (6 modems total), I have the advantage of easier troubleshooting. I also use externals, which are much easier to setup and can swap out faster.

What range of speeds are you connecting at with the problem modem? Richard's site has detailed info on how to use Hyperterminal to call other #'s. You can get the test #'s at:

There's the possibility, although slim, your modem and the ISP aren't happy.

I would suggest checking the ati7 screen to see what firmware version the 2 modems are running;

The firmware is key to the modem's understanding of the PCM downstream; USR will release different modem model #s with different firmware that can have trouble with certain line conditions/server modems....
