I previously had a US Robotics 56k V.90 that fitted into an ISA slot in my computer. I enjoyed great connection speeds and download times with it. On upgrading my motherboard (which had no ISA slots only PCI), I purchased a PCI version of the above modem and have been very disappointed with it's results (poor connection speeds)

How long have you had it? If not long, and can swap, reward your new mobo with an external modem. Easy to install and setup, no drivers to update every fortnight, etc. PCI modems, for me, involve too much hit and miss, so I chunked them, except for one Lucent which works, but not nearly as well as ISA or externals I have.

So is there anything that can be done with it, apart from disposing of the offending article.

I'd try Richard's site and dial several other ISP numbers, just to see if another offers a better connect speed. My own has several numbers, however I still get 56k but different speeds. My vast experience with USR modems is that if they won't connect past 28.8 right out of the box, they go back. I have an old one that hits 50, an internal ISA that hits the 40's, and a new v92 that pushes 50. However, in recent years I've tried other models of USR that wouldn't go past 28.8 - same pc, same telco line, same ISP.

I'd get an external if you have $70-100 laying around, and end the misery. Suggestions include Diamond Supra Express (not the USB) or even the new USR v92. The Express gets all the reviews from folks as being the tops. I have 2 of the externals and 1 of their ISA.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

What is the model? The company I work for(an isp) have had some problems with some of the USR 3cp. Many of them haven't been able to connect successfully above 28,800. I don't know if that is the model you have but it is one thing you might want to check out.

My product number is 802884A. It is an internal PCI USR 56k V90 modem. I bought the thing last August!

Guys - you need to ground your PC to improve perfomance of USRobotics PCI modems.

Believe me:

As far as I know, my PC is grounded as the mains plug is earthed. Another thing, why wouldnt USR control centre work with my modem
