Ihave two pc's same mfg. one has a HSP 56k pci fax modem v.90,the other had CONEXANT 56k fax modem v.90 both pci, the pc with HSP connects at 38-42000 kbs. the one with CONEXANT 26,400 kps. max. I replaced the CONEXANT with US ROBOTICS pci fax modem model #3cp5699a all the settings to my ISP are the same on both machines, use the same phone line, checked wiring ect. Still having the same problem, one hooks up at 38-42, and the other still at 26,400. Please HELP!!!

The first thing to try is unplugging the "good modem" from phone jack while using the other pc with slower modems; assuming this is your setup. I have to unplug other pc's modem, or I get anywhere from a 19200-26400 connect. If this isn't your situation, the easiest, although not necessarily correct answer, is your ISP isn't compatible with other 2 modems. However, given the Conexant and USR, this may not be the case. At least 1 should give better results.

Sarge,
Thanks for the input, but I'm not running other modem
when the slow one is on line, I'ts either one or the other, not both at the same time.I will try youre Idea
but I suspect the problem is in the pc, cause it was doing it since new, contacted ISP cause was running an old pc with 14,400 and new one with 56k was only hooking up at 26,400.They said not their problem,so after switch to USROBOTICS this week, still 26,400.

With the USR, check the y11 for a/d conversion/marginal line

ISP said their going to send tech with laptop with known working modem to their sys&

If you have the USR installed, do the a/d conversion check as Richard suggested. More details are at one of my sites:

http://www.geocities.com/sarge67us/USR.html

I don't believe it's your line if other modem gets 56k connects (38-42). If you have the Conexant modem installed this time, in extra settings under modem properties, type S202=32S95=1

Sarge,
Still on it. I work 12 hr. shifts so its hard to come home and research at 9:30 p.m. I belive the usr & conexant modems are not compatible to run on my lines.
If I reinstall conexant and type what you suggest in extra settings, what could I expect? My ISP techs told me to initialize diff. string on modem, force v90, but I think its a copout on their part. Don't have to do this to the other modem.I have an HCF modem, try it?

The s202=32s95=1 string works on alot of Conexant by making them connect at 56k; it works on every Supra Express, anyway. As for your lines not being compatible with either USR or Conexant, don't believe it. That would mean only Lucent would work. Of course, anything is possible.

Sarge,
Thanks for all the Input. Imay try putting the conexant back in, but before I do that is there any
comand in extra settings that I could try with the USR modem before I pull it. Downloaded new driver from their site, no change , could it be Bios setting from PC Manuf? I have a spare modem identical to the one that is in my other pc.Real cheapy, but.... Should I give it a shot? Would rather stay with USR! HELP!

but... Speed 28800/26400 , and modulation v.34/v.34+
and all frequencies (dB) level is 0 . did I do something wrong or is the modem only running at v.34,or is it being told to run at v34.If you need more input I printed out results.can I force v90 on? or
56K? found in troublst. how to disable, but not enable
May I be getting close?? I will appriciate any help!!

I assume the diagnostics met the specs in Richard's site. In extra settings under modem properties for the USR, there shouldn't be anything. Try typing S32=002 If this doesn't get a 56k connect, forget it with USR. I've had some models that wouldn't get past 28 and exchanged until got a model that would. An old one of mine does great, the one that came in a 2 year old Gateway does great, my new v.92 does great. However, models I tried past 2 years stunk (for me). Guess that's why I always recommend the Supra Express external - it always gets 56k.
