NT 4 SP6a/SBS 4.5 connection was running fine. Few weeks back started getting disconnected but modem thinks it's still connected -- OH and CD stay lit but no communication. Power down and up reconnects ok for 15-20 minutes then returns to disconnected state. No errors on NT machine (except per below) and DUN/RAS enters strange state where neither 'dial' NOR 'hangup' options are available. Have latest firmware; reloaded drivers -- including USR provided, NT provided, and modified INF's per Microsoft technote on Adaptive Answer (though this modem is used strictly for Internet dial-out). SOMEtimes see Error 629 -- rare. Limited to 28.8 with no change to behavior. Have tried two different v.Everythings (external).

Am boggled. Anyone have any ideas?

TIA

Paul

Check DIP switch on bottom of modem - esp. Normal Carrier Detect; and DTR (s/b normal -not- always on);

Check modemlog

Also - is this a new 3CP3453 Courier or the old 28xx?

Richard:

Thanks for your inputs. DTR switch is/was set to 'Normal'. Modem shows multiple reasons for Disconnect including...

Loop loss disconnect
DTR dropped
Loss of Carrier

Slowing down the speed (to 33.6) does seem to reduce the frequency of disconnects, but has not eliminated them.

Is the older style V.Everything.

Any other suggestions?

TIA

After many attempts at resolving this -- including use of Microsoft drivers, USR drivers and MS-recommended changes to USR driver, am still unable to maintain a connection. Modem log files are available at...

...if you have any inputs.

The modem could be dying.
I have seen a Courier exhibit similar strange, intermittent behavior for which the only solution is trash can or USR repair.

You could try removing cover and making sure daughterboard is securely seated into main board.

Richard
