Hi,

My name is Chris, it may be a long shot to ask you this question but I have been searching the web sites for like 3 1/2 weeks, who knows maybe your knowledgeable enough to unluck the mystery. I am tying to locate the right INIT STRINGS for my modem which is 3Com U.S. Robotics 56K V90 Voice Win aka. (WinModem) with product id:66297401, model number: 2974. I am using a dial up networking and for some reason, my internet speed went from fast to very slow.
My hard drive crashed so I reinstalled a new one but erased everything including INIT STRING which was properly configured before so now I am VERY DESPERATE of finding the right combinations of strings, do you think you can help me with this issue? For you info I have went to 3Com and U.S. ROBOTICS web sites which has lead me to a total dead end...

Chris

Your modem cd should have the at commands on it. I got the command list a few years ago from USR site and printed it. That was before I found them on cd. I've never seen a USR increase speed with a string - if you find it let me know. Next time, take note of settings you use and put on a floppy. Here are a few sites you might pursue:

The correct init string is no init string (when using with DUNs)
www.808news.com/56k/initmagic.htm

The correct initial init string for testing in Hyperterminal is
AT&F1

You should first do an a/d conversion check so you don't waste your time if your line will not support 56k connections.

One of the nice things about USR modems -
from Hyperterminal you can get a complete list of supported commands by typing

AT $
AT s$
AT &$

etc.

Aloha,
Richard
