jdibacco Tl Posts: 2 USA | Posted - 5/1/2001 8:44:58 AM I recently dumped a Creative Di5630-4 win-modem after trying everything I learned on this site. My problem with the win-modem was not connection speed, is was getting connected! It normally takes between 5 and 15 attempts, but when I connected it was between 38000 and 42000. Which, considering where I live and the fact that I'm on PacBell, is really fast. But due to this connect problem, I popped for a real modem - USR 3CP5630A - Internet Profession. And, as I hope, it connected on the first attempt every time. BUT, and this is a big BUT --- I can't get it to connect any faster than 31200. I'm using the same computer - 1.1ghz AMD - WindowsME - 512M RAM - the same phone line - the same ISP - the same phone number - that gives me 38000 - 42000 on my controllerless Creative Di5630-4. I've tried USR customer support ... but all I can get is canned answers like try ATX4 or ATX3 or ATX2 or ATX1 ... and if that doesn't work try ATX0 which reports connection at 115200 regardless of the real connection speed. I've also tried the &Un&Nn without success. Can anyone help? Joseph |
SARGE Tl Posts: 743 USA | Posted - 5/1/2001 7:56:49 PM I've had several models of USR and a few wouldn't budge past a v34 connect, but my others are great. Use this site and put it to the tests, especially dialing other #'s with Hyperterminal. If it does ok with some but not others, it's a compatibility issue. |
jdibacco Tl Posts: 2 USA | Posted - 5/2/2001 9:20:11 AM Sarge - Thanks for your reply - I'll give your suggestions a try. By the way my modem log shows the following string after the ATDT#######<cr> ... CONNECT 31200/ARQ/V34/LAPM/V42BIS. From this it appears I'm getting a V90 connection i.e. V42BIS. Or, am I misinterrupting this string? Joseph Joseph |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 5/6/2001 9:33:57 AM 31.2k is a V.34 rate; V.42 is error correction/compression protocol and will show for V.34 or V.90 connects. 31.2k is actually a very good V.34 rate; you may be on a DLC carrier system that has problem with 56k or interoperability problem with your modem - If you 'pass' the test, I suggest try calling other ISPs, esp toll/toll-free #s to determine if you can get any 56k-rate connect; if not, make sure you are hearing the V.90 attempt - boings - Aloha, |
