I just bought this modem to replace an Actiontec Call Waiting modem (Lucent Venus chipset). It peforms far below what I was hoping (I was hoping it would peform similarly to the actiontec modem). At high speeds it pauses often for long times and throughput drops from 5k/s to 3k/s quite often, when it isn't pausing. I've also tried the "gaming mode" (which I have to run manually, the install didn't install the util), which runs more stable, but still pauses fairly often, but for shorter periods of time. I've even tried v.34 connections and have had a difficult time getting it to connect and maintain a v.34 connection. Since I've used 2 other modems with out trouble (the Actiontec and a Diamond SupraExpress modem) I assumed I wouldn't have any trouble with this modem. The only thing I can think of is some compatibility issue with my ISP (since both the other modems were KFlex/V90 based). Since I can't go back to my old modems (borrowed the Actiontec and the Diamond is ISA), and can't switch ISPs (there is only one) is there anything I can do to fix this modem, or should I take it back. I'm sending a message to USR tech support, but I doubt I'll get a helpful response anytime soon. I've never used their tech support before, but i've yet to find good support :)

Thx,
Jas

Depending on what speed you're connecting at, if too high then modem is retraining, getting blers (data that has to be resent), thus stalling out. Often the modem and line can't maintain a high speed. Try adding &u17&n23 in extra settings under modem properties. This will limit max speed to 36. If this improves things, change the n to 28 and then 31. This will change speed to 42 and 46 respectively. You can check your stats on one of my sites:

I've tried numerous speeds, and according to the diagnostics, the problems is retrains and link naks, blers remain in the single digits unless I connect at full speed 48-49k. It will retain both up and down, even at low speeds, I saw it retrain from a 31.2k v.34 connection down to 21k - through something like 7 retrains. Now I've never had these kind of problems with my other modems.

Make sure that your phone line is OK - see
www.808news.com/56k/demarc.htm

If you are sure the problem isn't in your line/wiring, based upon the behavior you describe (retrain down to 21.6k even on V.34 connect), I would suspect a defect in the modem you have purchased.

I just noticed your post. I'm having the exact same problems with my usr performance pro. I have never had these kinds of problems with other modems. I now have 3 different ISP's and the problems exist even at speeds as low as 26400. I jumped on ebay this morning and got myself a courier and diamond supraexpress, and will post the results as soon as I get these.

Same here. For reference here is my post:

I have the same "dropouts", retrains and pathetic gaming performance. I have purchased a Zoom 2920 (Lucent Venus controller based) and will evaluate it's performance when it gets here. I am now playing on my new 1.4Ghz Tbird and running Internet Connection Sharing on my "old" Tbird 1Ghz with the trusty old USR ISA 5687 and my gaming performance is back. I took the 5610A P.O.S. back to Walmart and told them to shove it up their A#$.....hehe.
