I was about to purchase the Courier V. Everything (2806) then read about a newer model, the 3453.

I've found it hard to find information about the 3453. I think Alexey has written a long review of it but it is in Russian only.

So far I know the 3453 can be flashed to V.92. And it comes with a universal power adaptor (100-240V). Are there any other substantial differences between the 3453 and 2806?

Which is the model to buy?

Tried to read as much as I could on the Net about the differences between the two. So far I found:

Pros

1. 3453 features V. Everywhere technology, which "supports most country-specific phone services". What exactly does this mean? More sales speak?

2. 3453 comes with a universal power adaptor (100-240V).

3. Flash ROM increased to 1 megabit.

Cons

1. Uses only 1 circuit board (the 2806 has 2) and hence cheaper to produce. Richard feels this a profit increasing move.

2. Uses electronic (transformerless) DAA. What's a DAA? Richard feels this to be less reliable and more susceptible to lightning damage.

Similarities

1. DSP and supervisor processor unchanged.

I live in Asia, so some of the pros like the V. Everywhere and universal power adapter do come in useful. At the same time I don't like the new electronic DAA.

Any more input people?

No. New Silabs DAA is more universal. And now Courier have unique hardwarew design for ALL countries.

Old Courier's have not less than 6 types of hardware circuit board design.

Yep. THis is very good. When or if you will travel - you no need to care about how much Volts is in foreign electric socket.

No. 1Megabyte.

Yep. I think so.

I don't think so. I have newe Courier 3453 almost 1 year and mu colleagues too. Now new Courier is saling wide in Russia/CIS and we have no complains about lightning damages.

This is way to go for most of all modem manufacturers.

Thanks for your reply Alexey. One question for you:

Yes, I noticed that there are different Courier models for different countries. For UK it is #3175 and Asia-Pacific it is #982806-00.

Do you mean there are differences in the hardware/firmware design for different countries?

So if I buy a US model courier (#2806-00), will it work in Asia?

Yeah. OLD EOL'd have different hardware design.

You'd better buy new Courier 3453 instead of old EOL'd. Only new 3453 have univeral hardware design which work fine on CO in any country's.
