I've tried the USR Performance Pro, took that back, got an USR ISA modem (accidentaly) but tried it anyway and then took that back and got a USR External (005686-03). All 3 of these modems are giving me the same problem, based on the diagnostic screens it seems to be link naks. Blers, retrains and speed shifting only become a problem at higher speeds ~49k (it won't connect any higher that this, but sometimes will end at 50k with a 52k v90 peak speed). Lower speeds don't have the blers or retrains, but still have the link naks. And I don't have these problems with non-USR modems (Actiontec call waiting, Diamond Supraexpress).

Keep in mind I've tried all of these things:
Unplugging all other phones (can't find a demarc box here)
Different computers (PCI/Ext on one, ISA on other)
Different phone jacks
Different speeds
Different connnection protocols (v34,v90)
Locking speed (with same &U and &N values, prevents speed shifts, but doesn't alleviate other problems)
Flashing when available (Ext has been upgraded to v92)

Also, there is only one ISP I can use, and they only have one local number, I'm not sure what their hardware is but it is based on K56Flex/V90. And it looks like I'll probably be stuck with a USR modem of some type, I can't find any non-USR hardware modems around here.

I'm probably going to try bringing this Ext modem to a friends to test it out at some point, just haven't got around to it.

So, what is a link nak, and what can I do about it.

Thx

SARGE

"Link Naks: Negative acknowledgments (one or more blocks) - the remote modem didn't acknowledge receipt of your data. Zero is a good number here"

So my ISP's modem isn't getting all my data, what can I do about it?

Normal to have some with USR modem; you may never eliminate 100% of them; other chipsets do not use Link NAKs in diagnostics; concentrate on throughput -
lower connect speed may result in better throughput.
