I was recently putting together a new computer and am experiencing difficulties getting my modem to work properly. The system specs are as follows: Asus a7a266 mainboard, 128 meg pc2100 ram, 1.3ghz tbird, soundblaster live, matrox g450 dual head for video, and a 3com USR PCI OEM 2976 modem. My trouble comes with the modem when i go to dial. It picks up, gets a dial tone and then proceeds to dial. Therein is the problem, it dials REALLY faintly, and then i get the "if youd like to make a call, please hang up and try again" business. I've tried to get it wo work under Windows98 Windows95, Redhat 6.something, and Mandrake 7. It continues to do the same thing consistently. I know the modem isnt broken, Ive tried it in another computer and its worked fine. Ive tried several diffrent driver sets, different phone lines, different PCI slot, even took the modem back and got it replaced. At this point Im hopelessly lost, anyone got any good ideas?
Thnx, Xanin

I haven't tried using a idfferent modem on the board yet. Reason being Im lacking another PCI modem at hand and I really would like to avoid buying another if i can. Returning things gets old real fast. My thought at this time is it might be a power issue, that for some reason the PCI slots arent being supplied with enough power.

Hmm, turns out that the individual who put the computer togethr (not me) somehow managed to not secure a power connector right it seems and that resulted in my problem. Not exactly sure how it happened, but after unplugging all the power cables and rehooking them in the case everything worked.
