Installed USR 56K Faxmodem PCI (5699A), WIN98 2nd edition. Had massive difficulties, but have finally ending up installing latest drivers from USR website. Device manager shows that modem is installed and working properly, but modem will not dial out. USR tech support says they do not know why modem will not work, but suspect that software that came with modem is bad.

I have tried a different PCI slot, re-installation, etc. It is on Com2, IRQ 13 (if I remember correctly)

I am installing this for a friend, and am losing my mind. Any ideas for as to how to proceed?

Thanks for any help!!

JCH
P.S. As of this morning, I had double-checked all the modem settings and they are okay. I also tried HyperTerminal, and with an attention command am okay. (AT=OK). With an ATDT####### command, I get first a no dialtone error, then a no carrier error. I'm stuck!!

How noisy are your lines? From what I've seen, that modem has a pretty low tolerance (compared to many others) to line noise.

Can you connect at all? What were you trying to connect to through hyperterm when you got the no carrier?

If you can connect, drop to command line interface (+++) then do an ATI11 and check the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio)- anything below 50 and you'll have some serious problems with this one. If the line noise is bad enough, it can affect the ability of the modem to detect a dial tone.

Just a thought.

See if modem will go off-hook & dial using Hyperterminal
www.808news.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.htm

Make sure phone cord is plugged into LINE jack on modem - not phone jack.

Richard
