I saw this modem at my local WalMart. Is it any good? Has anyone had any problems with it? Being external, it is a Controller Based Modem, correct? Thank you for your time.

All external Serial port RS-232 modems (including this one)have a controller chip built in them. Unfortunately, I haven't tried this v.92 version, though I have the v.90 version. Anybody out there with reviews on USR's v.92?

I'm having SEVERE line problems with several. V.90s have no problem with the lines, V.92s upchuck on dialtone. I'm on here for help and will be posting a new thread if there isn't anything else comparable.

I just installed one, and while net connections
are working fine, both Communicate! version 10
and Phonetools (the latter as supplied on the
installation CDROM) fail as answering machines.
Communicate! receives a spurious fax-coming
indication of some kind, and Phonetools hears
a continuous high-frequency note. Anyone else
try using this model for answering? Any
suggestions how the nasty sounds are generated,
why, and how to get rid of them? Thanks.

The USR V.92 modem is data/fax - no voice.

I have had numerous problems with the usr 5686D V.92 external modem. I have had the "garbled noise" problem as posted elsewhere on this forum. I have also had random disconnect problems. What makes my comments significant is that I have tried 3 usr 5686D modems. I bought my 1st one at CompUSA. Sent it back to usr and received a second modem. Sent the second one back and recieved a third 5686D. I must point out that USR's service has been admirable. (Maybe UPS is conspiring with USR - just kidding.) But.... the fact remains that I am experiencing the same problems I had when I purchased the first one.

I have two other 56K modems - an older external v.90 Best Data and an older internal usr modem. Neither of these modems gives me any trouble. But they routinely connect at about 1K to 2K slower. No noise, no random disconnects etc.

I have talked to a couple of tech people - including a supervisor who mentioned a 'switch that may be defective' - whatever that means.

I suspect that there is fundamental problem with these modems. Whether or not its related to voltage changes or not I don't know. I do know my AC adaptor is plugged into a decent surge protector with various filters for both the telephone line and incomming voltage.

A particularly annoying problem is that when the modem is turned on for any reason it randomly produces the garbled static sounds making it hard to talk over the phone. I have to turn the modem off to eliminate it.

At this point I am considering asking usr for a refund and may try another V.92 modem like Zoom's. (Let me hear from you if you have a Zoom or other V.92 modemm.)
