I just installed a used Courier which I bought on Ebay. It had been upgraded to V.90. However, it never connects faster that 28800. I have another computer with a different modem that connects on the same line at 53000. The Courier shows up as Courier V Everything INT PNP (V.90 & X2) in the Control Panel. It is set up to connect at 115200 and there are no conflicts in Device Manager. Why is it so slow and what can I do to correct it? Thanks for help.

USR has driven me crazy at times. An older Sportster 56k connects solid everytime at 56k speeds, and has for the longest with all ISP's. Tried a couple of newer models 2 years ago that wouldn't budge past 28.8. I knew my lines were ok, as my other modems (Supra Express, Boca, etc) did just fine. I recently tried the new USR v.92 and it's now my best modem.

You may have an issue with the ISP. Only way to find out is dialing other ISP numbers, but don't get your hopes up. I know of no string that will force a USR to get a 56k connect. Your line is obviously ok, as the other modem does well. Try this link to run some tests. It has a link to get a handful of #'s to dial. Good luck.

Do you get a double handshake?
If you do not, then the modem is not even attempting to make a 56k connection.

Check init string; DUNS connectoid settings; modemlog;
Make test calls in Hyperterminal;
Check y11 for a/d conversion
