Ok, I'm pretty new to modems, been lucky enough to have cable untill reasently. I started out with the cheapest Winmodem that Comp USA sold. Like I said I was new. Well I could connect, and would have a stable connection but slow. d/l speeds at 1.7kps tops. Well read up some, figured must be the cheap ass winmodem. So went and bought the new USR 56k V.92(5686D) ext modem. Figured surely that would help me some. Well it has helped a ton speed wise. Although it says 21600bps when I connect, same as before. You can tell that is does things much faster. Only problem is the stabilty now. Of course I'd like to connect at 56k instead of 21.6k also.

I don't know what to do to make it more stable. Mostly I play games. Well I start up say Diablo II. Get pings at first of 300 or so. After about 1 or 2 min it will jump up to 10k ping and I'll have awfull pings for another min or so. Then it will drop back down to good pings for a few mins. Does this over and over. Old modem never pinged under 550 but it also never went over 1k. So thought well maybe it is just DII. Started up Counter-Strike. Nice pings to some servers. Under 250. But soon as I enter a game my ping starts rising. Hits 5k and stays there. I get booted from game usually or just finally leave. So why is it not staying with the low ping? It seems to kind of die out. If I go to d/l something it will do great, well 2.7-2.9kps, for a few min then it will just completely stop for a few min. Doesn't respond at all, can see that little green lights on the bar at the bottom go out. Either comes back in 3-5 min or stays out untill it disconnets. Usually I can open another window if I'm at the computer and it will come back right away. So it seems to just stop responding, kinda of like your compture going into screen save if ya stop messing with it. Don't really know what info is needed other then modem for some one to help me. System specs:
PIII 800
Intel Mobo
384 or so ram
Radeon LE vid
onboard sound

I have max speed set to 57600, Data bits 8, parity: none, stop bits 1. Under port setting use Fifo is checked Recive buffer is at 14, transmit buffer is at 16. Under Advanced, use error control checked, Compressed date checked, Use flow control and hardware checked, standard Modulation and no extra setting(do I need to add inti string here)? Don't know if any of this helps but it is what the ISP Customer serv always wants. They don't know Jack. Maybe I should change. Earthlink as bad as AOL and MSN? The line I dial up to supports v.90, kflex v2 and everything else.

I'm just really going nuts, I know it isn't going to be anywhere near what cable was and I've gotten over that, but no matter what game I try to play I start with great pings and just go down hill. Sometimes it comes back to good pings but then goes back up.

Get your line checked by telco, first. Inquire if on a "pair gain" setup or straight copper. You want the latter. If the latter, insist on a noise & transmission test (it's free) to be performed at your dmarc, with a written copy of the results. Save 'em and give them to me. Second, your RTD (round trip delay) indicates you're a long way from your server. Thirdly, here's the link to decipher your stats above.

You're welcome
