I have a USR PCI v90. It has been very reliable up until now. As of late it seems to have trouble letting go of the phone line when it is done. It dials up just fine. I can surf all day if I want. When I hang up, I notice that I have no dial tone if I go to make a phone call. I need to disconnect the modem cable from the phone jack. Then dial tone is perfect. Similarly if I finish surfing and disconnect, I need to unplug and replug the modem cable if I want to dial back in to the internet.

Is this a hung modem?

Has anyone experienced this? Any suggestions?

Sounds like a damaged line relay on the modem, any recent storms, nearby lightning strikes just before this problem started happening?

Initially that is what I suspected. However I could not convince myself because I could not explain why unplugging and replugging would get it to operate flawlessly. I would think that if the relay is bad, it would continue to be in an inoperable state regardless of whether the cable is connected or not.

I could be wrong. Any ideas?

Most times when the line side is bad you can disconnect the phone line and reconnect it and dial out immediately while there's a dial tone but if you wait too long then you'll get a 'No Dial Tone' message.

Try unplugging the modem from the phone line, then reconnect it, wait a few minutes and then try dialing out, what'd that do?

It's also possible that the relay was magnetized by a surge just enough to hold the line when phone line voltage is applied and removing the phone cord allows it to release until the next time you connect. It may remain that way or it may demagnetize itself with use, hard to say.

Or if the line side of the modem is "wet DAA", semiconductors (transistors) instead of a relay, then the semiconductors could be faulty.

btw thanks for your help...

Time does not seem to make the difference although I'll continue to watch for it. The prevailing symptom seems to be that whenever I need a dial tone, whether to make a phone call or dial up to the internet, I first need to unplug the cable modem and replug it.

still puzzled.

See http://modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.htm for how to setup Hyperterminal.

Start the Hyperterminal session, unplug the cord from the modem and then reconnect it and in Hyperterminal:

Issue ATH1 and the modem should go offhook and you'll hear the dial tone. Issue ATH to hang up.

Now wait about 30 seconds then issue ATH1 again, if you hear the nice lady saying that "you haven't completed dialing and to please hang up and try again" or a loud nasty beeping noise then the modem's line side has been damaged and is holding the line open, sorta like leaving the phone offhook when you get through with a phone call. Issue ATH to hang up (at least tells the modem to disconnect).
