I just installed an external US Robotics Sportster faxmodem with both v.90 and v.92 capability. The modem works beautifully BUT the USR Control Center software program cannot recognize that the modem has been installed, therefore I cannot get updates, etc. I have checked Modems in Control Panel, and the correct modem is listed there. What more can I do to get the Control Center software to recognize the modem?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Try downloading a new control center from the website - I heard that there was a problem that was corrected....

Yeah, you gotta download the latest version from USR.

Thanks for the advice, folks. Sounds reasonable, but would the latest version be dated 1999? Unless I'm looking in the wrong place on the Web site, that's the latest version I can find. Sigh...how come this stuff is never easy?

Dont' argue with USR...they'll burn your home down with a hidden explosive device in all their modems.

But, seriously, go here and download the one on the site. That worked for the modem I USED to have.

Catch-22 time! After three tries (ISP kept disconnecting me), finally downloaded the new software. Installed it...hooray, it recognizes the modem. I go to try to update it. Uh-oh...it can't make a dial-up connection. I think...I'll try to connect first, then start Control Center. Guess what?
It doesn't recognize the modem when I'm online!
AAARGH! Any other ideas?

Who is your ISP? You will need to select a DUN connection or an AOL connection from the setup menu. I no longer have my modem, nor do I want to get into the story... therefore, I cannot help as much as if I had the modem and program itself.

Good luck.
