Actually, having the initial connect speed go down
is not necessarily a bad thing.

Seems a better policy is to start at a speed
without errors and then work up, rather than work
down from a situation experiencing errors.

For this reason I no longer put such importance
of initial connect speed.

It would be real nice to have a utility that
watched both the connect speed and the effective
throughput.

Well - think that one through. There is no way for the modems to connect at the "lowest error-free rate". In order to do that, then they would have to conenct at the lowest mutual speed, then fall forward until they discover the peak rate. This doesn't make much sense. Granted, cars start out slow then go faster, but that's because of physics, not errors. It makes much more sense to establish at highest common speed, then, if need be, fall back to an acceptable error level.

It has to negociate, and I think this
starts from the bottom speed on up,
so it has every chance to figure things
out.

Modems start from top speed and work down.
