My computer is Compaq deskpro 6000 series with pII 266 cpu.
I installed the modem to com1 or com2 or com3, but there is no dial tone. The phone line is OK. If I try to use X3 command, I can hear the dialing sound of it. But nothing happened after it dialed. The IRQ assigned to the modem is 10.
The stange thing is I did not see any modem emulator in the system device table. When I run modem->property-> diagnosis-> more info, the modem repsonse to some AT commands. But with AT6, it sends 0 chars and receives 0 chars. While there is no IRQ or I/O address for it if I try COM3. If I try COM1, it indicate IRQ4 but no I/O address also.
I installed another Conexant HCF pci modem on this computer, same thing happend.
Can anyone give me a solution?

BTW, My OS is Win98 SE.

Here is the log file of the modem. The error message indicated no dial tone detected.
When I run diagnosis, it indicated address is 0. Is that correct?
Can anyone give me a suggestion?
Thanks.

Try accessing the modem in Hyperterminal.

See http://modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.htm for setting up Hyperterminal.

Then see http://modemsite.com/56k/usehyper.htm

It sounds as if either the line cord to the modem (or what it is plugged into) is bad, or plugged into the wrong jack on the modem.

Note - if your linecord has 4 wires running through, in some cases that can be a problem (if the yellow/black pair is connected to a line or voltage).
You can see if the line cord is 2 or 4-wire by looking closely at one of the ends.

Richard

I did check the line cord, it is two line. The phone line and jack is ok.
I tested the modem with hyperterminal using direct to COM1 setting. The tests are almost OK except for ati6 command, which sent and received 0 chars.
When I dial with atdt command, I can here the dialing tone from modem. But I can't get connection.
The following is the output of hyper terminal.

What country are you in?
What country is the modem installed for?

The modem may be damaged.
Or, you may have uninstalled prior modems improperly or installed this one improperly;
How can you install a Winmodem (which makes its own virtual com port) to a real port?

What OS are you using?
Try the modem in another system?

Richard

Thank Richard.

I am in USA and the modem is setup for USA.
The OS is Win98 SE. I have never succeeded to install a winmodem in this OS. I have tried two winmodem and two computer. Both don't work.
From the the message that I posted, you may see my problem. Do you think I can't install a winmodem to COM1? I just following the install procedures. Shall I disable COM1 in BOIS?
BTW, before I install the modem, I remove this modem from the registry by the program from USR.

Well, yours being a Compaq pc, this may not work, but try it anyway.

Boot to safe mode
Remove modem and all com ports in device manager.
Shutdown, turn pc off and physically remove modem.
Restart and enter the BIOS (if Compaq lets you).
Disable Com 2.
Set "PnP OS Installed" to NO.
Set "Reset Configuration Data: to YES.
Restart, then shutdown, turn pc off.
Reinstall modem, restart and install.

This may help since you can't get any pci modem to work. Modem installation is normally an easy chore. Read this for a little info:

Thank SARGE.
I have tried your way. It doesn't work either. I have tried in a different OS also.
It looks like this modem has something wrong.
