I've got a 56K V90 External 3Com analog modem. On boot up of the computer it's attached to via serial port, 4 lights will light up on the modem (even before it finishes counting RAM) RD SD TR CS lights are all lit up solid. When this happens, the modem will not respond under Win98, or Win2K to dial up networking requests or any other request for that matter. Occasionally I can power cycle everything and get the modem to retain just the one light in which case it works fine, however, after a few hours disconnected from the internet and just sitting idle, 3 or 4 lights will just light up again and the modem will quit responding again. I've switched modems (I've got several spares) and each one does the same thing. That tells me that it's the serial port on the computer, however, this has happened on 3 computers in a row. Anybody know of a solution for this. I really appreciate any help you can give me.

Are you using the proper serial cable, I mean the one which comes with these modems?

Also, check out the power supplies - my external USR (model 5630, 4 leds) comes with 9v A/C, 1 amp, 230V.

Also check DIP switches on modem.
Reset the NVRAM profile to factory default with
AT&F1
AT&W
