Windows 98, installed USR 56K FaxPCI, replacing OEM 28.8.

The CD that came with the modem repeated crashed after starting the installation. Nevertheless, and somewhat to my surprise, the modem worked fine even though I never did a full install.

HOWEVER, it configured the modem port as com 5, which works for everything EXCEPT a critical and dated application which I need everday in my work. This old clugger (which cannot be upgraded) will only recognize modems on Com ports 1 through 4.

I cannot figure out how to switch the port via windows. I tried twice to reinstall and got the same results. A request to US Robotics Tech Support sent three days ago has not been answered. I am dying, I need to fix this problem.

email me at rlange@uplink.net and I will answer any questions on config of my system if you can help me switch the port back to Com anything less than 5. It has to be easy but I can't figure it out.

Please don't tell me to upgrade my critical app, it simply cannot be done right now.

Thanks.

More configuration info:

Under Control Panel->Modems->Diagnostics I get:
Com 1 No modem installed
Com 5 US Robotics 56K Fax PCI

No other port info is showing.

Boot to safe mode.
In device manager (rt click my computer, properties to find it) remove all modems and Com Ports, and anything in "Other devices".
Shutdown, power off, physically remove modem from pc.
Restart, go into BIOS setup.
Disable Com2.
Set "PnP OS installed" to NO.
Set "Reset configuration data" to YES.
Restart, shutdown, power off.
Replace modem, restart, reinstall.

Sometimes Com5 is just an alias for one of the standard com ports, might try accessing each com port (1-4) in Hyperterminal to see if you get a response from the modem.

If that or Sarge's response doesn't work then try this:

Thanks ever so much to both of you. I will try these things and get back to the board with followup.

I opted for the Registry Edit. It worked. 5 minutes later it was a done deal after days of frustration.

Extreme, extreme, EXTREME expressions of gratitude.

Thank you VERY much, can't tell you what a difference this made in my life and I'm not kidding. If you need a nomination for sainthood...

Someone had posted that site in another newsgroup sometime back, almost forgot I'd bookmarked it, I'm just passing it on

US Robotics Technical Support a big help -- NOT

They finally got back to me and wanted a bunch of
info about my serial number etc. Obviously a form
letter type of reply. It was apparent that they didn't
even read my query, as this is a Windows configuration
problem, not modem specific. And, it was caused in
the first place by their installation CD crashing
repeatedly.

Very disappointing.
