AFTER SOME 5 MINUTES OF DISCONNECTING FROM THE INTERENET USING DIAL-UP ACCESS, THE MODEM TAKES OVER THE PHONE LINE AND THERE IS NO DIAL-TONE. THE ONLY WAY TO REGAIN CONTROL OVER THE TELEPHONE LINE IS TO DISABLE THE MODEM OR SHUT DOWN THE COMPUTER.

I WONDER WHY?

Possibly a defect line relay driver transistor on the modem.
