I have a USR 33k external modem that i have borrowed and it works fine, but i cannot get this 56k V.92 external modem to work. the modem dials, i get the modem tones and then the connection times out and the dial-up-connection says "no answer"
ISP person told me to call USR and i have, and they gave me a couple of different things to try, but they didnt work. anybody have any ideas what could be wrong???

Few things to try:

(1)In the Dial-Up Networking' folder, right click your ISP's DUN connection and select 'Properties', Select the 'Server Types', the only items that need to be checked are 'Enable software compression' and 'TCP/IP', uncheck all other items.

See http://modemsite.com/56k/connectoid.htm

(2) In the 'Dial-Up Networking' folder, right click your ISP's DUN connection and select 'Properties', on the 'General' tab click the 'Configure' button and set the 'Cancel call if not connected within' to 90 seconds. Click OK on everything and then try a connection.

(3) In the 'Dial-Up Networking' folder, right click your ISP's DUN connection and select 'Properties', on the 'General' tab add a couple of commas after your ISP's phone number (ex. 5551234,,). Click OK. Then try a connection and see if that helps you connect a little easier. Might have to experiment by removing a comma or adding one or two more.

Might also try connecting to your ISP in Hyperterminal and if you connect or not, get the ati6i11 data and post it here.

See http://modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.htm

And http://modemsite.com/56k/usehyper.htm

> Disconnect Reason is Unable to Retrain

I got something similar to this when I first installed the V.92 Beta drivers for the Conexant HCF modem, the modem simply would not connect to the ISP, found out that if I limited the maximum connect speed to what I normally connected at then I would achieve a connection.

In the 'Dial-Up Networking' folder, right click your ISP's DUN connection and select 'Properties', on the 'General' tab click the 'Configure' button, select the 'Connection' tab, click the 'Advanced' button and enter &U18 &N33 in the 'Extra Settings' box there. Click OK on everything and then try a connection.

If you still have a problem connecting, change the &N33 to &N30 or &N26 and try again.

tried the &u18 &n33 and n30 and n26 with no success, however i did get the 56k modem to connect with 3 commas after the phone number, but DUN would only negotiate a speed of 2400bps. Everything was so slow, i could not operate that way. 28800 is already too slow, but i live with it.

Ever made a 56K connection on your line?

What kind of speed did you get with the 33.6K modem?

Any noise on your phone line?

from my location i have always been able to negotiate a 28800bps with my internet service provider.
i have done this with 2 different 56K ISA USR modems, 1 PCI 56K USR modem, and a 33K external USR modem over the period of 5 years. I tend to get lighting into our phone line and thats why i have had so many different modems.

Well, I think you should either invest in a phone line surge protector or remember to unplug the phone line from the modem if you know a storm may be brewing.

Ok, try disabling X2 and V.90, use S32=98 in the Extra Settings.

bob,
sorry i never replied, i gave up on the modem and just settled for the 33k until someone emailed me and told me he had tried the s38=98 command and it work for him, so i tried it and it work for me also. found out that he was using a ASUS motherboard, which is the same manufacture i am using. could it be a compatibility problem with them modem and the ASUS motherboard since that is the only thing he and i had in common with our computers??
