control center doesnt recognize any usr products even though win me does, modem connects and appears to be working correctly but would like to update drivers and do some tweaking, any help appreciated

Control Center is of no use. You don't need any new drivers (if any even existed), especially with the external. What problems are you having that may be fixed by tweaking? USR provides excellent stats after each ISP connection; they may offer some clues, then you could tweak.
