After purchasing a USR 3CP5610A brand new, I was annoyed to find that it was defective. I tried multiple times to return the Modem; but to no avail.

A couple of months later (now) I wanted a V.92 Modem, but I knew I'd need a U.S. Robotics Modem, because nothing else gets a decent connection on my rural area telephone line. I decided to give them another chance, and puchased a brand new 5686D- The noise problems showed up AGAIN! Needless to say, I was quite miffed.

Before breaking the shiny new external over my knee, I decided to try a few inline telephone devices I had lieing around. Man, oh man...

The first device I tried, a generic Radio Frequency Interference filter from Radioshack (Catalog #43-150) did the trick. I plugged it into my 5686 and "boooonnnnggg" DIAL TONE! I nearly injured myself trying to locate my 5610A to test it out, and it works! It works, it works, it works! Ha-hee!

*ahem* Anyway, those of you that can't dial in the evenings due to this problem, try an RFI filter.

Oh yea, one more thing- Wee!

Sounds like USR may be skimping on the filtering for the modem.

Hey Bob, do you happen to know what the latest firmware revision for the Performance Pro is?

Control Center will only identify my 5686D, and MUW _NEVER_ works.

It would be great if U.S. Robotics had archive, current, and beta firmware available...somewhere. *sigh* :-p

You said you found your Performance Pro to be defective - what were the symptoms it was exhibiting? I actually came across these boards looking for a modem to replace mine with because I get gigantic spikes (if you can even call 10-15 second interruptions spikes) which are even sometimes are large enough to cause disconnects (if your modem was behaving in the same manner & you do any game playing I'm sure you understand my frustration) and I too assumed I recieved a defective modem. My old P2 233 PC with a 3Com ISA Winmodem had a much higher ping but I almost never disconnected and did not experience large spikes so I'm fairly sure it's not my phone line. Were the problems you were experiencing similar to mine?

Oh, no...I'm afraid not.

The "defective" part I mentioned was that during the evenings, a noise would come from the Modem speaker, and if I was connected at the time, the connection would become _very_ unstable, and ultimately, I would get disconnected, and I would be unable to reconnect until the next morning. This is the defective part I mentioned, which I fixed with a filter.

The connection was great for me, though. I'm using the 5686D now, of course, but I tested it a couple of days ago. I ended up giving it to my brother, and I did have to limit the connection speed to 45,333bps, because it wanted to ride at 50,666, and that deserves a good laugh on the lines out here.

You might try limiting your connection, or if your ISP supports it, use X2. It seems to work better than V.90 on my line, for whatever reason. Unfortunately, I can't always use it, because my ISP has USR AND Cisco Access Servers, and the total control boxes are just about always filled. (Damn Ciscos give me 32,000bps)

Anyway, that's what I was talking about.
