I emailed USR tech support, and they instructed me to add the following to my extra initialization commands: ATS10=150&S15=128

In Win2K I had to replace the "&" with a space. It seems to be working thus far though I haven't had a chance to test it extensively.

Possibly their intention was for you to use S10=150 and S15=128 in the Extra Settings and didn't mean the "&" literally.

S10 Sets the required delay, in tenths of a second, during which the modem waits before hanging up after loss of the carrier signal. This guard delay is used by the modem to differentiate between interference or other disturbance that interrupts a connection momentarily and the disconnection (going on hook) of the remote modem. [Default = 7].
NOTE: If you set S10 = 255, the modem will not hang up when carrier is lost. Dropping DTR hangs up the modem. This possibility is country-dependent.

S10=150 tells the modem to wait 15 seconds before dropping the connection if the carrier is lost.

S15=128 Disconnect on escape code. (possibly due to the S10 setting, Windows may have trouble disconnecting the modem by DTR drop and this tells the modem to disconnect when Windows sends the escape code (three plus')/

I doubt that these to settings would cure any 'pause' problems online.

Might check the ati6i11 data after a connection to see how many speed shifts and retrains you're getting.

See http://modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.htm for setting up Hyperterminal.

In Hyperterminal issue ati6i11 to the modem to get the 'Link Diagnostics'.

Then see http://modemsite.com/56k/diag3com.htm
