Recently, I posted a topic "Flashed sportster still connect <56k" and in that post I was having trouble with a sportster 33.6 that I flashed up tp 56k....

Now, I have flashed several sportsters. A couple of them were sold by usr and one or two oem's by Gateway. All of the flash upgrades that I performed went well until this last attempt... I flashed this latest modem with the flash utilities from the russian site : http://flasher.webzone.ru/index.html and I flashed a previous sportster with the utilities from there as well. Both modems flashed and the first one connected at 52k after a reboot. The 2nd one however would not connect at a rate above 312000. I even attempted various strings to set a connection above 41k - the modem would dial out with the strings, handshake and then 1/2 way through a very high pitched and steady screech would occur - lasted about 5 seconds and then I would recieve a response that modem was unable to connect at this time.... I removed the commands and bingo -connection @ 31.2k

I flashed the modem back to a 33.6 and then I recalled a previous post http://forum56.com/topic.asp?topic_id=3020&forum_id=7&Topic_Title=Sportster+0460&forum_title=USR&M=True&S=True

I went to the micron pc suppot site and downloaded a flash utility from them... Ran it and went from 33.6 - 56k as listed in "modems" in control panel... I rebooted and the modem was listed as a serial mouse... Then I removed modem/drivers shut down and reinstalled and bingo, I had a 56k int modem that connected at 52k.

I SWEAR - I repeated the flash/power down cycle many times and ati14 listed the modem as a usr 56k fax int, ati17 listed v32bis, v34 +,x2, v.90.

I have never had this happen before as I have flashed a number of these modems...

Hopefully my experience posted here will help someone else...

Your post seems to mean you had success with the Russian flash from 33.6 to V.90.

I've been trying it, but even though I get the appropriate flash file, it won't do anything, because it says I have the wrong model number. Since mine is a 33.6, it has the model number appropriate to that - 00083909 (Model 0701), but the flash file is naturally for the corresponding V.90 model number.

Am I missing something?

The modem must be upgraded to X2 first, then to V.90

Unfortunately, the Flasher doesn't have an X2 file for this modem:

http://flasher.webzone.ru/smf.html

In his FAQ, he claims it's not necessary. I would think that you might not be able to upgrade to X2 first, anyway, because you could still run into the ID mismatch.

What would happen if I altered the product ID that appears at the beginning of the update file?

Probably turn the modem into a doorstop.

That's why I haven't done it yet. And since I was using Word Pad, the size of the modified file changed, so I tossed it out.
