An init string for what purpose? Under Windows the modem is already installed with the best init string(s), the modem will make the fastest possible connection based on your phone line quality. The only time you need any "Extra Settings" is to correct for a specific problem.

So what problem are you having?

See http://modemsite.com/56k/initmagic.htm

And I'll give my standard introductory remarks:

1) Pick up a phone and dial "1" - the line should be silent. If not, you can probably get the phone company to do something about it.

2) Make sure your phone cord from the modem to the wall is not extra long or extra thin.

3) It's OK to plug your phone into the "phone" plug on the modem itself, but don't split the modem with something else at the wall jack.
